Martin Luther King’s Birthday is one of our website’s busiest days of the year because many wonderful members of the driving public don’t remember whether:
- MLK’s birthday is a “legal parking holiday” in NYC [Yes, it is]
- MLK’s birthday is a “major legal parking holiday” in NYC [No, it’s not]
- There is a meaningful difference between a “legal holiday” and a “major legal holiday” [Yes, there is]

Do you know the difference between a “legal holiday” and a “major legal holiday?”
“Legal parking holiday”
Alternate-side parking rules are suspended for a “legal holiday.” [But that’s all, folks!].
“Major legal parking holiday”
- The Evil Empire permits stopping, standing, and parking, except in areas where stopping, standing, and parking rules are in effect seven days a week (such as “No Standing Anytime”).
- Parking meters are not in effect on major legal holidays
- Meanwhile, alternate side parking rules are suspended [Via NYC DOT website].”
Commentary
MLK Jr’s B-Day falls on the third Monday in January. But is only a legal parking holiday in NYC.

Good morning.
If the year, 2029, was the Warrior’s mistake, you’re a winner.
Otherwise, if it was your typo, I would check the front of the ticket for omitted, misdescribed, or illegible required elements because of MLK B-day is a legal holiday only. You are still required to obey all parking signs.
