‘Twas the night before Christmas, and not a creature was stirring, except…
A NYC sheriff and marshal searching for your car. “We have not taken anywhere near an aggressive enough posture to collect this money,” said David M. Frankel, the city’s finance commissioner, who has made dragooning those who ignore their tickets a top priority since he started the job last year. “We’re going to take a much more aggressive stand.”
More aggressive, my eye
NYC is very aggressive when it comes to hunting down scofflaws. The City uses collection agencies, tracks down out-of-state residents and businesses, refuses to renew drivers licenses and vehicle registrations, and has a battalion of marshals and sheriffs searching for scofflaws with more vim and vigor than Lt. Gerrard searched for the Fugitive.
If I have no parking tickets in judgment, do I have to worry?
Yessireee bob. NYC will now suspend your registration if you have five (5) outstanding parking violations in a twelve (12) month period; no judgment necessary. Yup, you heard me correctly. Five (5) outstanding parking tickets not in judgment in a twelve month period and you are toast!
This is nothing new, except holiday season DOF rhetoric. NYC agressively pursues scofflaws, and always has. NYC can’t collect the money.
What about Amnesty? Worked incredibly well in Chicago. How about a carrot instead of braveheart tactics. Offer to eliminate penalties for any scofflaw who comes forward during the month of January, 2011. Amnesty has worked well in other communities. Why not NYC? How about publicizing NYC DOF willingness to enter into payment arrangements for scofflaws that demonstrate financial hardhsip.
Who among us can write a check for $5,000? This is not the time to use the same old tactics. Bring out the carrot, and collect a bunch of bucks.
