Here are 10 tips about how to avoid NYC parking tickets when parking, stopping or standing on an NYC street:
- You are allowed to park at a broken meter for as long as for as long as you would normally be able to park if the meter were working. A broken meter is one that is not working at all or is too fast
- When a meter is missing, parking is still allowed for the maximum time on the posted sign
- If you are issued a parking ticket for an expired meter violation and the meter was broken, you must send your plea of “Not Guilty” to a different claim unit to be substantiated. Check “Broken Meter” in the third box at the bottom of the back of the ticket.
- This is an administrative claim, do not ask for a hearing. Send the ticket to NYC Department of Finance Meter Unit, P.O. Box 29021, Cadman Plaza Station, Brooklyn, NY 11202-09021
- You are not permitted to double park on street cleaning days and will receive an NYC parking ticket
- Signs are not required as notice not to park in a pedestrian ramp. The ramp itself is notice of the parking regulation. Be careful that no part of your vehicle is obstructing the ramp, or you’ll receive an NYC parking ticket
- When you raise the defense of “location does not exist” to fight your parking ticket, you may submit a copy of a street map, verification from the U.S. Post Office, or NYC tax information to verify that the location does not exist
- When you raise a “medical emergency” as a defense to double parking by a school, you may submit a statement from school personal that a parent or caretaker was called to school on a medical emergency
- If you are a commercial vehicle, you may double park your vehicle (Not Midtown) while expeditiously making a delivery as long as you submit proof that you were working at the location. Check to make sure there is no parking space or loading zone within 100 feet of the spot, on either side of the street (or you will not beat your NY parking ticket for double parking)
- You are permitted to stop your vehicle to pick up or discharge a passenger in a bus stop; as long as you do not block a bus
