Our dear friend from Australia and Bangkok, Gordon Wood, a regular visitor and contributor to our blog, sent us this article about parking tickets pain and suffering from Australia. Here’s the back story…
Today July 1, while in Melbourne, what better way to spend time but to have lunch with my son Dan. He manages city-based construction projects. He told me in the course of a week parking fines mount up as they often had little choice when moving people and equipment into city sites. Occupational hazard he called it.
But one of his colleagues was not so ambivalent. Aggrieved when he got fined for taking too long to pay the meter for a parking space he had just occupied for 38 seconds, he sent this letter to the Melbourne City Council. [I am sad to report the text of the letter is no longer available].

If you are issued an NYC parking ticket while walking to a Muni-Meter to pay your “toll,” you can raise the 5-minute grace period as a DEFENSE to the Muni-Meter violation. You have 5-minutes from the time the evil parking ticket was issued to secure a paid receipt from a muni-meter. The “start time” on the Muni-Meter receipt will set you free if it is within 5-minutes of the time the parking ticket was issued.
