An NYC parking ticket for failing to park on an angle
Once upon a time, a pretty long time ago, consternation was running rampant in Astoria, Queens. That is to say, parking tickets were being issued for failing to park on an angle. The NYC Department of Transportation repaved a 300-foot stretch of roadway on 31st Avenue in Astoria. The NYC DOT was so pleased with the new roadway, they decided not to muck it up by repainting the roadway markings for angle parking.
“Even though the city left up signs, without any lines on the ground, the residents say they didn’t know how to park.” [via ABC Eyewitness News_no link available]
Ergo, the flood gates opened, and parking ticket warriors unleashed a tidal wave of parking tickets for failing to park on an angle

Let’s start by taking a look at the parking rule:
Angle standing or parking. No person shall place a vehicle at an angle to the curb, except when such angle placement is authorized by these rules or by signs or markings. Notwithstanding the above, no vehicle that is too long/or too wide to be parked within a single designated parking space shall be parked in such a space which is designated for angle parking” [34 RNYC 4-08(m)(2)].”
The rule explicitly states that there don’t have to be parking signs and markings. One or the other is enough to get an unsuspecting member of the driving public a parking violation.
The result in Astoria was there were cars parallel parking and other cars parking on an angle…What a mess.
Commentary
The outraged Astorians contacted the media and their local NY City Councilperson. However, there was little relief in sight. Each was left to decide whether to fight or pay their personal costly epistle.
