What’s the difference between the parking sign for a taxi stand and a taxi relief stand?
I recently received a telephone call from Carlos, a super nice guy who drives a taxi. He complained that he parked his taxi at a taxi stand, and ran into a nearby store to purchase some bottled water. When Carlos returned to his yellow chariot, he found an angry orange parking ticket stuck under his windshield charging him with a no-standing violation.
Carlos was furious. He asked, “how can I get a parking ticket for standing my taxi in a taxi stand?” Likewise, he wanted to know where a taxi driver is supposed to park his taxi to run errands or tend to his bodily functions.
The answer is quite simple (that’s easy for me to say).
A taxi stand is where a taxi is allowed to wait for customers. It is a no-standing zone. However, a taxi driver must remain seated behind the wheel of his cab while standing in a taxi stand.
On the other hand, taxi relief stands:
“…allow drivers to park their vehicles for up to one hour. This affords drivers the opportunity to leave their vehicles and take care of personal needs. Taxi relief stands should not be confused with taxi stands, which are locations where drivers can wait, in their cars, to pick up passengers.” [some of the taxi relief stands are also available to For-Hire vehicles]. [Via NYC DOT].
Is the parking sign the same for a taxi stand vs. a taxi relief stand?
Nope. The parking signs are not the same.
Can passenger vehicles stop temporarily in a taxi relief stand zone?
Yup!
A taxi stand and taxi relief stand are no standing zones. Therefore, you are permitted to stop temporarily to drop off and pick up a passenger (but not property) in no-standing zones.
Where can I find these “taxi relief stands?”
The NYC Department of Transportation publishes a list on its website.
