Has a Barbaric NYC Notification Sticker Slimed your Car?

What’s worse? an NYC Shame Sticker

Or, an NYC parking ticket tucked under your wiper for a street cleaning violation? In other words, an NYC Notification Sticker or Parking ticket?

At least we don’t get a stupid sticker for expired registration or inspection.

There are four (4) garden type variety notification stickers, as follows:

The Traffic Enforcement Agents issued the Shame Sticker.  “When stopping, standing or parking is prohibited by sign or rule and an unattended vehicle is stopped, standing or parked so as to interfere with the free flow of traffic, Traffic Enforcement Agents are hereby authorized to affix a sticker to the operator’s side back seat window informing the operator of said violation and interference.

The Department of Sanitation issued the Sticker. “When parking is prohibited by sign or rule and an unattended parked vehicle interferes with the cleaning of the streets by the Department of Sanitation, the Commissioner of Sanitation is hereby authorized to affix a sticker on the operator’s side back seat window of the vehicle informing the operator of said violation and interference;”

The Fire Department issued the Notification Sticker. “When an unattended vehicle is parked, standing or stopped in violation of subdivision (e), paragraph (2) below, and obstructs access to any fire hydrant, the Commissioner of the Fire Department is hereby authorized to affix a sticker on the operator’s side back seat window of the vehicle, informing the operator of said violation and obstruction;”

Issued by the MTA New York City Transit Managers. “When standing is prohibited by a bus stop sign and an unattended vehicle other than an authorized bus is standing in such bus stop so as to interfere with the free movement of buses into such bus stop in violation of section 4-08(c)(3)  of these rules, MTA New York City Transit Managers are hereby authorized, only after having issued a summons to such vehicle, to affix a sticker on the driver side back seat window of the vehicle informing the operator of said violation and interference.”

Commentary

If you violate any of the above rules, you risk winning a parking ticket; and possibly a sticker reminding you of your parking crime. Is the sticker redundant? Or, a valid, educational reminder of your malfeasance? My feeling…If you are issued a notification sticker by an agency that is not authorized to issue a parking ticket, and you did the parking crime; a sticker is fine. On the other hand, if you are stuck with a sticker and a ticket, it is redundant, unnecessary, and punishing you twice for essentially the same crime.
