Parking in NYC requires patience and know-how.
Parking in NYC can be hazardous to your health and pocketbook. If the parking signs don’t baffle you, the roadway markings will. Can you identify a safety zone? Can you legally park in a safety zone when parking signs permit parking?
Meanwhile, there are only about 2300 warriors to patrol NYC. But it feels like 23, 000 and they pop up every day and at all times, particularly when you park illegally.
Consequently, here are some helpful things to know before you risk life, limb, and your pocketbook to park in NYC.
Learn about “floating lanes” before parking in NYC
There are times when a picture is worth 1000 words, and a video is even better. Check these out!

Congestion

O.k. I think we can all agree that NYC meets the first test. Our streets and highways are congested. So, on to the next challenge.
How do we solve the problem of congested streets? Which also impacts parking in NYC.
Easy, charge a fee for driving a car in Manhattan. And raise the price during peak traffic hours.
O.K., let’s move on to some serious challenges like double-parking while you run into Starbucks for “just a minute.” Now, that’s a tough one.
Not so fast, Mr. parking ticket fighter person. There are countless iterations to your elementary solution. And there is little agreement among all the stakeholders. Meanwhile, NYC expects to start congestion pricing in 2023. Here’s what some real experts say:

Are the parking rules the same on major legal holidays and Sundays?
Yes!
On MAJOR LEGAL HOLIDAYS, stopping, standing
and parking are permitted except in areas where
stopping, standing and parking rules are in effect
seven days a week (for example, “No Standing
Anytime”). Accordingly, parking meters will not be in
effect on major legal holidays and Sundays, nor will ASP Rules.

Commentary
There are many parking puzzles to solve before you can park painlessly in the Big Apple. For example:
- A safety zone trumps a parking sign that permits parking when parking in NYC. Never, ever park in a safety zone.
- If two signs with different rules regulate your parking space, follow the stricter regulation, regardless of what the Evil Empire says.
- Do not double park to “run into _______________ for only a minute” because guess what? That minute will cost you $115.
- And so on and so on and so on.
Be safe and park safely.
