Parking ticket tips. Have you ever displayed your NY license plate on the dashboard of your car?
Ca-ching. If so, you are easy prey for the sting of a parking ticket warrior’s scanner, to the tune of $65 if you ignore this valuable parking ticket tip. What if the bolts break, you ask, and you can’t attach your license plate? Nail those suckers on. Or else, you will be issued a parking ticket for violating Code 74, which prohibits:
” Standing or parking a vehicle without properly displaying its current Plates. Proper display means on the outside of the vehicle, conspicuous, securely fastened not more than 48 inches, or less than 12 inches form the ground, clean, not covered by glass or plastic, and unobstructed.”
There are no exceptions, period.
NYC parking ticket tip #1: Don’t stop, stand or park your vehicle on the mean streets of NYC without both license plates properly displayed, otherwise you are guilty of violating Code 74.[Larry’s note: out-of-state vehicles must display their plates according to the laws of their state].
O.K., now we have that straight, can you display your registration on the dashboard of your car without getting an NYC parking ticket?
Ca-ching, ca-ching. It looks like your dashboard is getting a little crowded. How lucky is the parking ticket warrior that stumbles upon your vehicle parked on the street with the registration sitting on the dashboard of your car? You are a wounded duck, and have earned the privilege of donating $65 to the Department of Finance for violating Code 70, which prohibits:
“Standing or parking a vehicle without displaying a current registration sticker”
I have clients who literally race to their parked car with the new registration in their pocket, ready to attach it to the windshield. You are toast. Ca-ching, ca-ching, ca-ching.
NYC parking ticket tip #2: You cannot stop, stand or park your chariot without a current registration affixed to the windshield. Period. If you don’t have a current sticker, secure a temporary sticker and attach it to the windshield (I recommend taking a time-dated photograph showing the temporary sticker attached to the windshield).

Paul Newman got it right with this song. Likewise, there may be one thing the driving public can safely display on the dashboard of their car.
Who remembers Paul Newman’s rendition of this tune in the movie, “Cool Hand Luke?” [You may recall that he was convicted of cutting the heads off parking meters and sent away for 2 years at hard labor]. And we thought NYC was tough.
