An NYC parking meter high I.Q. will save you money
There are plenty of rules that control our relationship with NYC parking meters. Likewise, advancing technology has created myriad ways to pay these insatiable toll-takers for the privilege of parking curbside and in public parking lots.
The days of the simple machine that lived in each space are gone forever. The Evil Empire replaced them with multi-space mega machines that take your money. You must find one on a blockface, choose how to pay it and return to your car to display your receipt. That is to say, unless you have the “convenient” NYC pay-by-plate parking app on your smartphone to seal the deal.
The good news is that there are helpful resources that may be hiding in plain sight to guide you through this parking maze.
Let’s take a look.
Parking meter resources
Resources
- NYC 311 “Parking Meters”
The image below is a list of topics found on the NYC 311 Parking Meters Webpage. The drop-down menu contains a lot of helpful information.
2. DOT “Parking at a Meter”
Among other useful information, the page walks you step-by-step how to pay for parking at one of these mega parking machines
3. ParkNYC “ParkNYC“
Everything you ought to know about using “ParkNYC.”
4. NYC DOT “Metered Parking Map”
Larry’s comment
The small, button in result menu #2 is color-coded to match one of the colors in the Legend. In this case, the Zone color is light blue, “Zone 3.”
…And the Zones will appear
with the parking rates
Or you can search by zone number
- And then, click on “View in Attribute Table”
where you can find some helpful information.
Want more? Then click the three little dots found in the bottom right-hand corner.
If you want to read about the new laws passed on Christmas Eve
5. New Law, “Major New Parking Meter Law Passed on Christmas Eve”
How about a chart of the parking violations?
Commentary
Single-space parking meters have morphed into multi-space mega machines covering entire blockfaces. Inserting quarters in a mechanical meter has changed to a click of a smartphone. Technology is amazing. Or, do you long for the simple days.?
Parking is expensive and complicated. Long live parking for free on Sunday!
Be safe.
