Status parking tickets refer to the condition of your car
When there is something wrong with your car, such as missing plates, expired inspection and registration stickers, or broken mirror, you can bet your bottom dollar that you’ll be issued a parking ticket. This category of a parking ticket is referred to as status parking tickets because they are triggered by the status of your car, not the car’s location.
Is there any way to beat these types of NYC violations?
YES! Here are some valuable tips to help you beat NYC parking tickets for vehicle-specific violations.
Status parking tickets FAQ
1. My car is registered out-of-state and is only required to display a REAR license plate. I was issued a parking ticket in NYC for an improper display of a license plate. Can I beat this ticket?
- Absolutely. All vehicles registered in NY must display a front and rear license plate. If your state only requires you to display a rear plate, you win upon application
2. I received NYC parking tickets for improper display of license plates, registration, and inspection sticker. The warrior failed to state why these items were displayed improperly. Do I have a fighting chance to beat these parking tickets?
- Absolutely. If the warrior fails to explain “WHY” your license plate, registration or inspection sticker is improperly displayed, the ticket is defective. You win upon application. When you’re right-FIGHT
3. I received three (3) parking tickets today for expired registration. Is there any way to get these parking tickets dismissed?
- Absolutely. This is a rare instance when the gods of parking laws smile upon the driving public. You can only receive one “Status” parking ticket in a 24 hour period. The second and third tickets will be dismissed upon application
4. Here is a true story recently told to me by one of our clients regarding an NYC parking ticket for “missing equipment.”
- “Last night I had to drive out-of-town (to Albany) – when I got to my car (parked on a side street) there was a note on my windshield wiper . . . someone apologizing for having smashed off my drivers’ side mirror and giving me their number. Very thoughtful. Sure enough, my mirror was a bit smashed and hanging by wires. Next to the note was a parking ticket for “missing equipment – driver’s side mirror”.
You can’t make this stuff up!
5. How can I beat this parking ticket?
- The parking ticket gods are still smiling. There is a ray of light that will illuminate the path to victory. Your parking ticket will be dismissed if you fix the broken or missing equipment within 24 hours of the parking summons.
- I was happy to learn that my client fixed it, fought it, and will win it!
Commentary
Has this ever happened to you? Did you fight your parking ticket and win?
[Larry’s note: (1) Many thanks to former parking ticket judge, Haskell Nussbaum for his terrific book, Beat that Parking Ticket, which is available on Amazon.com. I heartily recommend the book. It is chock full of valuable, useful information about the opaque world of NYC parking tickets]
I received an expired inspection sticker ticket on two consecutive days just over 24 hours between each. This occurred on the first two days of the month. Being in the middle of a workweek, I did not visit my car and thus realize it had expired. Is there any chance of getting one revoked or even reduced?
What a great site! Can’t wait to read your book.
Thanks,
Jan
Dear Jan,
Good morning…So kind of you to say!
So close…some judges will dismiss a second expired inspection sticker violation if issued the same day as the first violation. Others will dismiss the second ticket if issued within 24 hours of the first, regardless of the day.
You may wish to check for mistakes on the front of the parking tickets. If a required element is omitted, misdescribed, or illegible, you win upon application.
With that said, if you don’t find any mistakes, it may be worth fighting the second parking ticket anyway because there are no longer any settlement reductions. Explain to the judge that a second parking ticket was issued for the same violation while your car was parked in the same parking space. Don’t mention the time frame.
Good luck.
Best,
Larry
Hi. My friend recently got a ticket(missing/improperly displayed plate-blocked by cover)while he parked his motorcycle with motorcycle’s cover on the street. Is there any chance to beat?
Dear J.
Good morning.
Was there a clear plastic opening to display the plate?
If so, there’s a chance.
If the plate was in the plate protection program, then it’s going to be very difficult to beat.
Any omitted, misdescribed, or illegible required elements?
If so, you win upon application.
Good luck to your friend.
Regards,
Larry
Hello Larry,
I hope this situation can help others who may be baffled by the NY system. I was currently issued a ticket, while on a motorcycle, for “License Plate Not Properly Displayed”. The ticket was issued in Staten Island and by submitting a non-guilty plea it states that a hearing will be issued. Based on the information provided in this article “If the warrior fails to explain “WHY” your license plate, registration or inspection sticker is improperly displayed, the ticket is defective. You win upon application.”
If I submit a non-guilty plea, will the charge be dropped or would I have to attend a hearing to present my evidence. Also, where in the NY law does it show that the warrior must provide an explanation to the violation?
Thank you for your time!
– George
A car backed up into my car and my plates fell off. I put the plates on The dash board ran to my house to get more screws. And when I came back down I had a ticket for no front plates. I soon fixed it the same day. Can I get this dismissed ???
Yemi,
Ouch!
Man, what a shame.
How are you going to prove your story?
Regards,
Larry
Not a parking ticket but in Putnam co above westchester co, NY, I received a traffic infraction ticket for no right side mirror when I did in fact have the mirror and all the parts except the colored plastic backing that matches the car paint. The glass however was smashed in from hitting a small tree in a friends driveway. Is it legal for town cops to ticket for NO MIRROR when it is simply cracked?
Hi, I recently tinted my front windshield and didn’t notice the inspection sticker was void. So I now have a ticket for a voided inspection sticker, but it is not expiring until next year. Is there any way I can fight this ticket?
Thanks.
Oh BTW. the in violation of box states -“improper stkr safety only.”
In the comments box it says “no driver no permit no activity, inspection stk void #1234567 NYMA Reg.”
What does that mean???
Thanks again.
Dear Eva,
Good morning.
I read your two comments.
I’m a tiny bit confused.
I’m happy to check out the ticket online and see if I can figure out what’s going on here.
You may wish to reply to my reply and include the 10-digit summons number so I can look it up.
Best,
Larry
Hi I received a no front plate sticker, my car is out of state but the state that I’m in requires front plate as well. Any chance of beating this? Thanks in advance
Hi Leo,
I am sad to report (after dedicating 6 years, 7-days-per-week, with two months off for my heart attack) that I will no longer be answering questions on Larry’s Blog. You’ll find a treasure trove of information in the 746 Blog Posts and growing, F.A.Q.’s, and comments.

I was issued a ticket for a broken ‘left or rear mirror’
My right passenger door mirror was broken.
Can/should I fight this?
Hi Dan,
Good morning.
I would fight this stupid ticket.
Did you take a time/dated photo of your left mirror when you discovered the ticket?
Do you have a “rear mirror?”

Larry
Hi
Our car was in a accident last year the inspection expired in Dec 2022 we have the car parked on the street in front of our property. The car is registered and insured but is NOT being driven due to damage from the accident we are slowly fixing it up. We have 4 vechiles and only a 2 car driveway so 2 are on the street. A cop ticketed the car for expired inspection even though it OVBIOUSLY is not driveable. What are our options regarding this ticket. By the way the car has been sitting for over 4 months without incident.
Hi Blueangel,
Good afternoon.
Please don’t get angry at the messenger, but I’m afraid a cap or warrior is permitted to issue a ticket to a car parked on the street, despite the car being undriveable.
If it were me, I would contact the police precinct and see if you coud work somethng out about getting ticketed under these circumstances.
Good luck.
Regards,
Larry
