Learning about parking tickets takes relentless repetition
Knowledge is power. There is only one way to prevent the Evil Empire in its unappeasable quest to zap you with parking tickets, reach into your wallet, and grab your hard-earned dough…learn the rules of engagement!
I am posting short, three (3) question quizzes on our “HOME PAGE” and in the right column of LARRY’s BLOG designed to identify areas we need to talk about. The quiz will stay open for a few days. Afterward, I’ll write a post about the results, and provide some tips to allow our driving community with the knowledge to defeat the Darth Vader’s of NYC Parking Ticket Land.
First Question
- Is it legal to park between a stop line and a crosswalk?
Results: NO [67%]. YES [37%]. The correct answer is…YES.
I asked this question because of receiving many inquiries during the past few weeks about stop lines and crosswalks. You are permitted to park in this “demilitarized zone” as long as your vehicle does not touch North Korea. In other words, the front bumper of your vehicle cannot break the plane of the crosswalk line. It does not have to “extend into” the crosswalk. It simply has to be “on the line.”
Second Question
- All NYC is a tow-away zone. True or False?
Results: FALSE [67%]. TRUE [37%]. The correct answer is…TRUE.
NYC DOT website:
“All of New York City is a designated Tow Away Zone under the State’s Vehicle and Traffic Law. This means that any vehicle parked or operated illegally, or with missing or expired registration or inspection stickers, may be towed.“
Here’s a blog post about towing (if you forget this draconian rule). “What to Know when you’re Vehicle’s Towed”
Third Question
- A NYC parking ticket + $102.00 in judgment = Tow. True or False?
Results: FALSE [67%]. TRUE [37%]. The correct answer is…TRUE.
“Your vehicle can be towed for any reason at all. If you get one parking ticket you can be towed because all of NYC is a tow away zone. If you are issued a parking ticket and have $101 in judgment you can be towed. If you have $350 in judgment you can be towed by a marshal or sheriff.” “New Bill to Eliminate Towing in NYC” [not passed…what a surprise].
Commentary
Please take 60 seconds of your valuable time to answer these three (3) question quizzes because:
- It helps me learn about our driving community’s knowledge, and areas where we might focus our relentless learning
- Knowledge of the parking ticket rules empowers you to keep your money where it belongs…in your wallet
- You can defeat the Evil Empire at its own game
There are some interesting factoids and data contained in the Mayor’s Management Report for FY2011. Here’s a link to the page of the NYC Gov. Website that permits you to select the specific section you wish to download from this 200 plus page report.

Do you know how many parking tickets were issued in FY 2012? Was it more or less than FY 2011?
